New field clinicians need orientation before they see patients alone. Skipping it leads to errors and turnover.
What to cover
Policies (safety, infection control, emergency), documentation and OASIS, your EHR, and a few supervised visits with an experienced clinician. Don’t throw them a manual and call it a day. Role-play common situations: what to do when a patient refuses care, when to call the physician, how to document a late visit.
Before they’re solo
Checklist: orientation complete, competency validated (per your policy), and at least one or two joint visits done. Sign them off only when they’re ready. Rushing sign-off leads to errors and turnover. We have an orientation checklist template you can download: topics to cover and a sign-off so nothing’s missed. Use the button below to get it.
